I had the opportunity to see a similar thing first hand while sharing the stage with Tinariwen’s side project Imarhan at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, CA. Dear friend and fabulous musician Farmer Dave notes that during Bob Marley’s tours, he and his band would take every opportunity to kick the soccer ball in an effort build the team’s relationship and communication dynamic. In an era where we are so glued to hand-held cyberspace it is more important than ever to forge real world bonds. If one truly desires to make it a way of life, all aspects of life must be incorporated into the process, and bonds with bandmates and fellow musicians must be nurtured. There’s a lot more to a band than the music, and a lot more goes into the ability to engage in “face melting.” Music is a form of communication and good music is the result of strong personal connections. The album is a masterful piece of psych-jazz, conceptually elegant and thrilling it its execution. Since then, they’ve released an album with Chaz Bear - 2017’s Star Stuff, recorded under the name Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2 and which peaked at #1 on the Billboard contemporary jazz charts - and reinterpreted Coltrane’s legendary A Love Supreme which Jazz Times said “manages to hold Coltrane’s revered album in the highest esteem while absolutely shredding it to pieces.” Paradise, their eighth record, marks the first time that the brothers have added vocals. Subsequent releases include collabs with pro skaters Ray Barbee, Tommy Guerrero, Farmer Dave (of Kurt Vile), and Money Mark (of Beastie Boys).
They formed their psych-jazz group The Mattson 2 in 2003, and released their first album, Introducing the Mattson 2, in 2009. They grew up in San Diego, CA, where in middle school they started playing music decades later, they had earned Master’s degrees in Music from the University of California Irvine.
The Mattson 2 are Jared and Jonathan Mattson, identical twins who have been collaborating almost literally from birth.
